Rocky Mountains

If you love the mountains, it doesn’t really matter where you go when you choose the Rocky Mountains as your destination. Unless, of course, you are looking for the highest part of the mountains – then it does matter. The mountain chain encompasses 3,000 miles and runs from British Columbia to New Mexico. The Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado features the scenic Trail Ridge Road and about 300 miles of hiking trails.

The highest point in the Rocky Mountains is Mt. Elbert in Colorado at 14,439 feet. It is also the second highest point in the contiguous United States. This mountain is located in the San Isabel National Forest, just outside of Leadville, Colorado.

If you have a long vacation or are retired and you are thinking about traveling across the country, head east to Appalachia. While these mountains are not nearly has high as the Rocky Mountains, the Smoky Mountains have their own beauty including the Blue Ridge Mountains that seem like they are all blue and the quaint country towns that you can visit. If you are looking for antiques, this is the place where you’ll find more than you can haul home.

While in the area, visit Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; Clingman’s Dome, which is the highest point in the Smoky Mountains at 6,643 feet and Muddy Pond, a Mennonite community near Monterey, Tennessee where you’ll find a general store and, in the fall, a sorghum mill where sorghum is made the old-fashioned way.
